Team Santa Monica Newsletter - April 2021
Message From The Board President
As the club President, I have three things that continue to be on my mind: heartfelt spiritual celebrations, raising money, and the safety of everyone.
As promised, April has been an important month for celebrations. In addition to Earth Day, there was National Burrito Day, Garlic Day and even Raisin Day is on the 30th!! As far as I can tell, there is no New Year celebration in April, though, putting an end to our 3-month streak. Joking aside though, many of our kids competed in swim meets, and so many went back to some form of on-ground school – these are definitely excellent reasons to celebrate!
Moreover, we’re in the midst of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan (April 12th - May 12th). For observers in our TSM family and beyond, this is a time of heightened spiritual reflection and devotion, and of self-improvement and gathering with family. This includes fasting from sunup to sundown each day, which takes commitment in and of itself! Ramadam Mubarak (Happy Ramadan)!
Swim-A-Thon
Did you know that the fees we pay don’t cover our operational costs? That is why the Swimathon is so deeply important for the club. When it comes to finances, TSM is like any other non-profit organization – we need to raise money on a nearly continuous basis! We’re off to a slow start this year, and perhaps it’s because the energy (and money) we raise from being together is a much greater challenge right now. We need to appeal to neighbors, friends and maybe even family for this event. When the kids swim for this event, they feel like they are doing their part in helping to keep the club going. They LOVE it!
As always, no amount is too small, and the signup page will remain up well after May 3rd. 100% of the funds we raise go directly to operational costs and some scholarships. Let’s support our swimmers as they appeal to friends, neighbors and family for the future of TSM!
Date of the Swim: Monday, May 3rd 2021
Prizes: If your swimmer raises $150+, they get a custom red practice cap! More $$, more prizes!
Our Goal: $25k; if we get 100% participation, I am confident that we will achieve this goal.

Health and Safety
The US has successfully fully vaccinated nearly 30% of the population. Although that is not nearly enough for herd immunity, it is a big achievement! I am so excited to see that we are working together to put this pandemic behind us. I want to express my deepest gratitude to you and your families for working with TSM to keep each other safe, and in so doing, you have enabled our swimmers to stay in the water, nearly uninterrupted. That is HUGE!! Thank you!!!
OPEN WATER NATIONALS 2021
TSM had six swimmers qualify and four swimmers that were able to travel and compete.
Mattea Sokolow competed in the National 10k and the Junior National 5k. She placed 9th in the 5k.
Adam Shaaban competed in the Junior National 7.5k and placed in the top 15.
Alan Shaaban competed in his first ever Nat/JNat event ever and competed in the JNat 5k placing 18th.
Zach Tower also competed in his first ever Nat/JNat event ever, which was also his second OW swim ever. He competed in the JNat 5k and placed 21st.
This was the most 18U swimmers TSM has had to qualify for a National Championship. Well done team!
Even though the conditions were very rough and challenging, our swimmers were mentally and physically tough and did really well and we are very proud of them.
Go TSM!!!
